Lavish casinos on the beaches of an island in the Caribbean: The American Mafia had it made when it controlled gambling in Havana, Cuba. Mob author Scott Deitche will discuss this history at the Mob Museum in Las Vegas on January 5.

In this Organized Crime Today Videoconference program, Florida-based author Deitche will shine a light on the fascinating story of when the American crime syndicate set up shop in Havana, Cuba, in the 1950s and turned the island into a gambling mecca rivaling Las Vegas.

Deitche will discuss the fateful 1946 Mafia conference in Havana, the mob’s downfall in Cuba and its role in CIA efforts to assassinate Fidel Castro. Finally, he will provide a fresh look at the American Mob’s legacies in Cuba today.

The Mob in Havana: The Rise, the Fall and the Legacy will take place on January 5, 2019, at 2 p.m. in the Organized Crime Today exhibit space. Entry is free for members or with Museum Admission.
