It takes a lot of courage to fight the Mafia. Especially in Italy, where the four main crime groups - Sicily's Cosa Nostra, Calabria's 'Ndrangheta, Campania's Camorra, and Puglia's Sacra Corona Unita - remain powerful and extremely dangerous, able and willing to hit cops, prosecutors, and judges whenever they please.
The Al Jazeera documentary below, narrated by actress Helen Mirren, follows Sicilian judge Antonino Di Matteo. He is "one of the most threatened - and protected - men in Italy." He is now the chief prosecutor in what is being dubbed the trial of the century. "On trial are 10 men who stand accused of being part of a conspiracy between the mafia and the state. Five of the defendants are mafia bosses and five are members of the political establishment, including senior police chiefs and politicians."
As he goes about his job, Di Matteo is protected round the clock by 20 bodyguards. Like Di Matteo, these men display the courage needed to fight the Mafia. Fight it and win.
